About Processing at Farrlacey Mill |
The Farrlacey Alpaca Mill opened in October 2005 and is situated in Horncastle in mid Lincolnshire. We are uniquely able to offer a variety of services for the smaller alpaca owner.
We currently process 9 to 12kg per day on average and our best production runs are about 16kg in one day.
The Mill aims to process alpaca fibre in service to the Alpaca farming community by providing fine yarns, woven goods and products for crafts people including Rovings and Batting.
We are able to deal with any amount of fibre up to 500kg.
Read on to find out a bit about how fleeces are processed into yarn at our alpaca mill. |
1.The fleeces are washed.
| 2. Any tangles and knots are removed. |
| 3. Fleece goes through the dehairer once, then waste is dehaired again to get maximum yield. |
| 4. The Carder aligns all the fibres to turn into rovings which are used for handspinning or spun by a spinning machine to make yarn. |
| 5. The wool is taken up and plyed to make it into a particular grade of ply. |
| 6. The plyed wool now goes through the steamer which sets the twist. The yarn is then either put onto the balling machine or onto cones. |
